We at PEI Group are looking for a Senior Correspondent, Japan to establish and grow an editorial presence in Tokyo, with a primary focus on Japan's institutional investors and asset owners, including public and corporate pension funds, life and non-life insurers, banks and trust banks, endowments and foundations, co-operatives, government-backed investment organisations and gatekeepers. Engagement with the wider private markets community, fund managers, lawyers, placement agents and other intermediaries, is a secondary priority, valuable chiefly as context and sourcing that supports the investor-side reporting.
This role calls for patient, long-term relationship-building as much as reporting speed. Trust in Japan's institutional investment community is typically built in person and over time, and sources often won't go on record until that relationship is well established. Near-native Japanese fluency is essential to build these relationships directly and source material in-language.
This position is weighted heavily toward original reporting: breaking news, writing exclusives, identifying and analysing trends, and producing longer-form features, profiles and columns, always pushing past the news itself to its impact on the private markets industry. The Senior Correspondent, Japan will report to the Hong Kong Bureau Chief, with a dotted line to the global investor intelligence team, collaborating with both on ideas, sourcing and story structure.
The Senior Correspondent, Japan will work across PEI Group's stable of private markets publications, including PEI Private Equity, PEI Private Credit and PEI Secondaries Investor.
Your main responsibilities:
- Produce regular web articles, magazine content and e-newsletter NIBs consistent with PEI Group's mission of delivering news, analysis and features across its brands, with contributions to multi-media content such as podcasts as needed.
- Build and continuously expand a network of Japanese institutional investors as PEI Group's sole editorial ambassador in Japan, directly engaging on the record, on background or off the record, and converting these relationships into actionable insight and content.
- Maintain relationships with Japan's fund managers, law firms, placement agents and other intermediaries as a secondary channel, chiefly to source context and document the broader development of Japan's private markets industry.
- Incorporate internal and external data into stories as context and, where relevant, to inform story angles.
- Attend PEI Group and third-party industry events to raise awareness of PEI Group's editorial brand and reinforce the Senior Correspondent, Japan 's role as its editorial representative in Japan's private markets community.
- Communicate regularly with the Hong Kong bureau chief and participate in global content planning meetings across PEI Group titles.
- Maintain an active presence on social media, primarily LinkedIn, and use AI tools in relevant workflows, both in line with company strategy and policy.
- Maintain high attention to detail and accuracy at all times.
- This role involves access to sensitive and privileged information; the Senior Correspondent, Japan is expected to understand and adhere to journalistic ethics and consult with editors on any potential conflicts.
